The Story Behind the London Underground Photographs

While living in London between 1976 and 1978, Jane did what most Londoners do — she rode the Tube. Always with her cameras close at hand, she stopped one evening on the way home and took a few shots inside the beautiful West End stations. When the photographs came up in the developer, she was struck by their quiet, timeless beauty.

What Jane didn't know at the time was that she was photographing some of the world's first underground railway stations — the original wooden stations, designed with extraordinary care and celebrated as an architectural landmark. She also couldn't have known that those very stations would later be destroyed following the devastating King's Cross fire, making her photographs rare historical documents of spaces that no longer exist.

When she shared the images with the author David Long, a publishing deal was secured within a week. The resulting book, London Underground: Architecture, Design and History, stands as a lasting tribute to those lost spaces — and Jane's photographs are a permanent part of that record.

"I'm very grateful to have added to the history of these stations. Completely lucky." — Jane Magarigal
