From the middle of 1976-1978 I wandered the London Underground walkways, platforms, going up and down on escalators, and traveling many trains documenting what I saw.

I was a photographer, shooting mostly in B&W. I didn't go anywhere without my cameras. On the way home from my favorite camera store, I took a couple of pictures of the London Underground: first picture below. When the image came up in the developing tray, I was taken aback, it was so beautiful. Thus, began my year and a half stay in London Underground. I rarely left the stations, else I had to pay a fare. Needless to say, I didn't see where I had gone. I didn't end up see many sights. A shame, though I'd do it again.

Without knowing it, my collection of photos have historical significance as the Wooden Stations built in the 30's, were torn down due to the King's Cross fire in 1987 that killed 31 people.

The Wooden stations were my favorites. They've been defined as rustic. Agree, they were curvy and in a way sensual. Note the two hallways just below. Mind you, not a piece of wood in sight until you reached the areas where the escalators were.

Some peope ask me. Where are the people? There are a few pictures, such as the Tube employee on the cross, so to speak. Ordinarily, an employee would have chased me off. It was illegal to shoot the station: security. But I ask him and he struck a pose. He looks like a working class version of my father, and I am grateful for him. I love this picture. Look at the cushy seats.

Imagine the number of minuets awaiting the emptying out of people for a photograph. Added up to hours. But, the British are very funny, and I'd often find myself giggling during these times..

I decided to see if I could get the collection published in 2011. I sent the photos to David Long, having read one of his books on the London Underground, and, wallah, a week later we had a contract. Thank you David.
