Baby Giraffe Racerback Tank
Wouldn't it be awful if we lost the magnificent animals. Well, we are. The worldwide population of Giraffes has declined by 40% in the last thirty [30] years. There are nine subspecies. In the late 1980s 90 per cent of the Kordofan population vanished. Today there are roughty 2,000 left in the wild. Ninety-eight [98] percent of the Nubian sub-species are gone; the remaining 2,000 are on sheltered land in Kenya. A variety of reasons are primarily human made, they including loss of habitat, poaching and trade. One subspeies in Niger, are being hit by cars. They are critically endangered and being gathered up to move them to a safer environment. There are many more stories regarding loss of habitat such as Coal Mining and urbanization due to over-population. Civil Wars, need I say more about this. The small herds that are left are out of balance and inbreeding occurs in these populations, (2021: Environmental Buddy, Ashan Soomro) and (biologicaldiversity.org) Several subspecies are now listed on the endagered list. Critically Endangered are the Kordofan and Nubian Giraffes (2019: Smart News, Jason Daley). On the Endangered endangered list are the Massai, Thornicroft's, Northern, Ugandan, Angolan, Reticulated, and the West and South African, Giraffes. In spite of this, abuses to this population goes on. In Tanazania, people believe that bone marrow and Massai brains cure HIV/AIDS. In the Congo giraffe tales are sold as status symbols (National Geographic, Rachel Fobar). Internationally, help is coming from Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. What can you do? 1. Do not purchase any giraffe products. 2. Let your reprentatives know that you are very concerned about decreasing giraffe populations. 3.
