Wolves Returned to Yellowstone Wolves: I continually run across reports of Wolves being shot by Ranchers. This is called retaliation killing, as ranchers go after the wolves that eat their cattle. Though this is a worldwide phenomenon, because I live in America, all too often, the wolves that I hear about killed by ranchers are those living in and around Yellowstone National Park. Of course, wolves have a bad reputation because they kill livestock. This information isn’t new, and I imagine that most people would be okay with the rancher’s action. However, the unforeseen benefits of reestablishing Wolf Packs in Yellowstone far outweigh the loss of a few cattle, which can easily be solved by building safe areas for cattle. The Wolf Project began returning wolves to Yellowstone in 1995 Without wolves, the northern range of the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem was in disarray. Even Doug Smith and other wildlife biologists involved in the Wolf Project were continually amazed at the healing of an ecosystem. They had the opportunity to watch how nature works. The effects of this keystone predator being back created a cascading effect of conspicuous and inconspicuous benefits that took decades to manifest, decades of observations. Despite other predators, the Elk population exploded, and they no longer moved around as they once did due to the absence of wolves. The ‘carrying capacity’ (the maximum population size of a species that an ecosystem can sustain indefinitely) of the ecosystem was overwhelmed: grasses and plants of all kinds became scarce. Bio Elks' winter diet of young willow, Aspen, and cottonwood plants” made it tough for beavers as they needed willow to survive the winter months. Beavers could long build dams and their den, creating their ecosystem: deep cold ponds filled with fish and other aquatic animals, amphibians, salamanders, and insects. Because of the stunt willow stands, songbirds also disappeared. I’ll end this here as an introduction to how amazing Nature is. If you want to know the rest of the story so far, I suggest you read “Wolf Reintroduction Changes Ecosystem in Yellowstone” by Brodie Farquhar (6/22/2022). Returning the Grey Wolf to the Northern Region of Yellowstone Park healed this ecosystem. In 2020 there were Nine Beaver Dams, homes, and families.
