Dog Star

This painting is one of those happy accidents.  At the bottom are all the boxes we find ourselves in.  Boxes that keep us from, that which limits us in all possible ways.  This image is about climbing out these limitations and moving upward toward our higher selves, toward the stars.  Now, look.  Do you see a Dog in the upper right hand corner? I'll tell you in a moment how wonderous this image became, but first I need to explain the process of scratchboard.  Scratch board has a white clay bases that is covered by a rich black ink.  Creating images requires either a sharp tool for drawing or sand paper: anything that exposes the white clay underneath.  To protect the black areas, they need to be taped.  So, often you don't really know what you're creating until you pull all the tape off.   In this case, I discovered the dog, and since I was reaching for the star, seeking direction, what better direction than the North Star, which is called the Dog Star.  Happy Accident?  I don't think so.  This is my favorite painting.  Thank you whomever!
